Mudslide: A mass of mud and other earthy material that is falling or has fallen down a hillside or other slope.
Mudflow: A river of liquid and flowing mud on the surfaces of normally dry land areas, as when earth is carried by a current of water.
Both are excluded from Homeowners and Business insurance policies. However, mudflow coverage can be purchased under a separate Flood insurance policy.
As a homeowner, renter or business owner, it’s imperative that you protect your property from disasters that may occur in your area. Even if your region isn’t considered a likely area for flooding you may want to consider the option of flood insurance. Flooding can occur following a disaster like a hurricane or a severe storm, and can be the direct result of rising water levels nearby.
Q. What does flood insurance cover?
A. Flood insurance covers damage to your building and contents caused by flood. Financial losses caused by business interruption or loss of use of the property can also be covered but not by the National Flood Insurance Program. Coverage includes losses resulting from water overflowing rivers or streams, heavy or prolonged rain, storm surge, snow melt, blocked storm drainage systems, broken dams or levees, or other similar causes. Generally if water comes from above—for instance from rain or melting snow overflowing gutters and leaking onto your home contents or business inventory—you’ll be covered by your property insurance.
Q. Do I have to purchase flood insurance?
A. If your property is located in a high-risk flood area and you have a mortgage from a federally regulated or insured lender, you are required to purchase a flood insurance policy.
Q. How do I determine my risk for flood damage?
A. Location is the most important factor for weighing your risk for flood damage. Is your home or business located in or near a flood zone? In what part of the building is your contents, business equipment or inventory located? Anything on a lower floor, for instance, will be at greater risk.
